Assignment 2 Chapter 2:  Active Learning

For this assignment, please refer to the directions on page 39 of your text for the Active Learning Assignment.  Please follow the directions as outlined in this assignment.  You will need to analyze very carefully what you eat and where your food items came from.  Notice the word analyze.  This means to discuss.  DO NOT GIVE ME SIMPLE answers such as grass-cow-me.  As this may get complicated very quickly, you may want to choose only a few items and trace them completely to their roots.

In addition, make sure that you answer every single part of the question asked.  If you do not, you will lose significant points on the assignment.  There are several parts to this question.

For the assignment, you will need to double space your work, use complete sentences and correct grammar.  If you wish to make drawings of food webs instead, that is fine, but you still must answer the questions that are part of the Active Learning Assignment.  Just scan your drawings, and upload them.  Be sure to place your name and date on your assignment.

Directions for submitting your assignment:

Final Project

Acid Rain, Part II:

During the last two weeks (Units 4 and 5), you were asked to make additional observations on each of your cuttings at least twice a week, taking special note of any changes you observe since the last time you looked at the plants. You should fill out the data Table located in DocSharing to record your observations. If you were able to take digital pictures each week to document these changes, that would be wonderful.

This week you will submit a report that describes the interim progress of your project. Your report should describe what has occurred with the different cuttings in the different water treatments and it should include all of your observations into a Microsoft Word table that is located in DocSharing.

Review your original hypotheses from Week 1 and assess whether or not what you thought was going to take place is actually occurring, keeping in mind that your grade on this Assignment will not be based on whether or not you were correct. The following questions should also be addressed in the discussion of your findings collected thus far:

  • What effect does the different water sources appear to be having on the plant cuttings?
  • What do expect will happen by the end of this project in Unit 9?
  • Are your results supporting your original hypotheses? If so, how? If not, create a newly revised hypothesis

Remember your that Assignment must be written as an essay and must be formatted as per APA-formatting guidelines.

Alternative Assignment: Acid Rain: As an alternative to the acid rain experiment described above, you may submit the following Assignment:

During Units 4 and 5 you should perform additional research on acid rain in your area. Describe the research you have performed including your resources (such as internet sources, conversations with local officials, newspaper articles, etc). Record several observations regarding current rainfall in the area and any changes in your environment that would suggest the presence of acid rain. You must prepare a report summarizing your observations, including a discussion as to whether or not your original hypothesis is still valid.

Gene technology carries with it social and ethical implications—many of which engender personal views and discussion.

Select one (1) of the following biotechnology topics to write about:

  • Genetically modified crop plants
  • Genetically modified microorganisms
  • Genetically modified animals
  • Personal genomics and / or personalized medicine for humans
  • Gene therapy

Write a four to six (4 to 6) page paper on your chosen topic.  Organize your paper into sections corresponding to the following requirements:

  1. Biological basis. Describe the technology. Discuss what it accomplishes. Elaborate on the scientific principles that make this technology possible. Your goal in this section of the paper is to show the instructor that you understand the underlying science behind the technology. Describe how exactly the technology works. Discuss the biological principles that underlie this technology.
  2. Social and ethical implications. Without disclosing your personal view about this technology, provide an analysis of its social and ethical implications. State the ethical concerns apparent in the use of this technology. Discuss the benefits and risks. Your goal in this section is to look at all sides of the issue. In the next section, you will give your opinion.
  3. Personal viewpoint. In the previous section, your goal was to be as objective as possible, to look at all sides of the issues. In this section, your goals are to give a personal opinion about the technology and provide a justification of that opinion.
  4. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment, in addition to the course text. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources. The body of the paper must have in-text citations that correspond to the references. Integrate all sources into your paper using proper techniques of quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing, along with proper use of in-text citations to credit your sources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Examine DNA structure, and function, gene expression, and control.
  • Discuss the various applications of genomics and biotechnology.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in biology.
  • Write clearly and concisely about biology using proper writing mechanics.

Is this a “natural” or “added” sugar?  (HINT there are 4 grams sugar / teaspoon).  If no sugar or fiber is in one or more of the brand’s products, write a few sentences commenting on why, or what ingredient you think could have been used as a substitute.
    3. How many milligrams of sodium are in each of these products?  This of the brands produces a food product that could be consumed if someone were on a restricted sodium diet (ie? < 2300 mg/day)?
    4. Explain in a short paragraph the differences between these brands of the same product. Comment on significant differences in nutrients, vitamins and/or mineral content and ingredients.
    5. Which of the brands provides the most economical choice?  Is it necessarily the healthiest choice? Explain your answer.
    6. Which brand would you purchase and why?

The Biological Basis of Abnormal Behavior

Long ago, stress was triggered by diseases, injury, and starvation. Today’s stressors also include loss of status, bereavement, competition and loneliness, as well as joyful challenges like weddings and travel. Their effects are additive in that one stressor like overcrowding will reduce our resistance to another, such as a cold virus. When resistance succeeds, our stress diminishes; when we fail, our behavior may become abnormal.

Childhood trauma and wartime stress are risk factors for drug addiction and psychological disorders. You can get an idea of how it works in this short video or here and there.

In people whose genes make them vulnerable, stress may trigger schizophrenia or depression. It fosters addiction.

How Did It Start?

Stress may be physical, like a burn, or mental, like anxiety. In either case, stress causes the release of molecules called cytokines that may promote inflammation (or dive into this long account). Inflammation helps us to fight off infection, but in the brain it may lead tomental illness. So now we have so-called “cytokine hypotheses” to explain both schizophrenia and depression. If inflammation triggers mental illness, we have established links (more here) from our genes to body chemistry to inflammation to schizophrenia anddepression.

People vary in handling stress, but we all share a way to resist, called resilience. We can try to be tougherhumbler, and more mindful, immersing ourselves in wildness

For resilience we’re stuck with the genes we have, but the brain and the immune system can change!

Our responses to stress are influenced by our genes, but a genetic influence does not mean that there is a single gene for schizophrenia or depression or addiction. Nevertheless, genes are known to alter our sensitivity to environmental influences. In turn, the environment can sometimes turn genes on and off. A complex set of interactions may result in a disorder like schizophrenia. This leads to a question.

Question

Did psychological disorders arise by evolution? Did addiction evolve**? Was depression once an adaptive trait? Or schizophrenia? What does it mean if the mutations that led to mental illnesses occurred before humans existed?

(Your answer will depend on several considerations. First, the causes of behavioral disorders can’t be observed. That’s because the disorders are made up. They are not imaginary, but they are diagnostic categories—psychological constructs—rather than defective “things”. People suffer real pain but may not fit into boxes; the boundaries between one disorder and another reflect clinical opinion about symptoms alone, not causes. Second, some clinicians argue that mental illness cannot be reduced to brain diseases. Serious researchers may consider addiction a choice and not a disease***.

Before you answer, consider that maybe it’s our behavior that was responsible for the evolution. Maybe it’s not just about the genes, after all?)

*This may be changing.

**The evolution of physical disorders is accepted widely and taught in high schools. Mental disorders are trickier and more interesting.

***Simple answers may make you impatient. If you look for answers in the brain you will have plenty of company. Addiction may not be a pursuit of pleasure or an avoidance of pain in the form of negative reinforcement so much as a compulsion. It may be not a liking but a wanting. NIDA Director Nora Volkow and psychologists Robinson and Berridge have suggested that drug stimuli exert such a powerful influence over the behavior of the addict that he or she wants nothing more than the drug. This is called the incentive-salience model. Here’s a quick summary of the view from Volkow and a longer one from Berridge.

The dopaminergic system of reward may be more of a system to focus attention on stimuli that predict reward. An even newer line of investigation is looking at how addicts make decisions, hypothesizing that the crucial problem may be dysfunctional ways of making choices. We should not call addiction a moral failure or even a disease, perhaps. It’s hard to deny that it’s a disorder.

Movement, Cycles and Rhythms

Actions for ‘7. Movement, Cycles and Rhythms’

Hide Description

The control of movement is often divided into mechanisms of reflexes and of voluntary movement.

What is a reflex? It is a stereotyped, automatic movement evoked by a specific stimulus. It is uniform across members of a species. Some examples in humans are the patellar or kneejerk reflex, the salivary reflex, the orienting reflex, and the pupillary reflex.

In reviewing the reflex arc, pay special attention to proprioception, the distinction between alpha and gamma motor neurons, muscle spindles, the stretch reflex, and primary motor cortex. (Prof. Suzuki also discusses the basal ganglia and the cerebellum, but in another lecture that I have not assigned. They are covered in the embedded book chapter by Kalat, entitled “Movement”.)

Further, let’s think about the cycles in our behavior. They are ancient and varied. We certainly inherited them from species that evolved earlier than we did.

We harbor a number of rhythms. Generally we have cellular cycles that augment the day-night rhythm to regulate our behavioral cycles. There are possibly very long cycles that govern our evolution. Men and women both run on cycles, though with differences. But do our cycles still make biological sense?

Questions (answer one)

  • Can you point to any movements that do not involve reflexes–or some reflexes that do not involve movement?
  • Sleep is tied to recovery of normal function and memory formation. Why does it make sense, then, to stop for sleep just because the sun sets? Why not sleep just whenever we have a backlog of memories to form or we’re under stress or sick? Does the wide variation in our daily experience require such an extreme regularity of sleep regulation? Since we don’t learn or exercise the same amount each day, why do we nevertheless sleep the same amount? A number of possible answers are given in the first 10 minutes of this fascinating podcast, but offer your own insights as well.

  • Furthermore, women show more pronounced cycles in sex hormones than men do, including menstrual cycles and a rather imprecise biological clock with a different origin. Is this an evolutionary leftover, no longer necessary or helpful for humans? Would you want the equivalent of a birth control pill for all of our cycles

Visual System

 Actions for ‘5. Visual System’

Hide Description

It’s easy to get swamped in details about the visual system. (This animation may help.)

Videos 10 and 11 discuss the visual pathways that originate in the retina and “ascend” to the visual cortex via the thalamus.

In this week’s resources the retina is revealed as more than a screen for images. Light falls on different classes of photoreceptors, rods and cones, which organize light stimulation according to their pigments by intensity and wavelength.  From the duplex nature of the retina there arises a tradeoff between greater acuity in the center and greater sensitivity in the periphery. The output of the retina is further organized into receptive fields, and sideways connections between the photoreceptors and horizontal cells sustain lateral inhibition that sharpens contrasts. A retinotopic map is preserved by the visual pathways all the way to the visual cortex; on the other hand, the image still requires a lot of interpretation by the brain.

Yet when we look at the world we notice only the rich panorama of detail that relayed to the brain via the fovea.

Questions (answer one)

  1. How is the retina different from a movie projection screen? Try to be specific.
  2. How on earth did we end up with eyes that are mostly peripheral retina and only tiny foveas? Should a sensible retina have more foveas—or larger ones, perhaps? Or might peripheral retina be more than leftover real estate?

Assignment : Gene Technology

Due Week 8 and worth 120 points

Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation outlining the process of light reaction in photosynthesis. Include the following points and principles in your presentation:

  • Present anatomical features and organelles needed to carry out photosynthesis (guard cells, stomata, parenchyma cells, inner and outer membrane of the chloroplast, stroma, grana, and thylakoid).
  • Provide a diagram that explains the major steps in the light reactions of photosynthesis. What are some ingredients and products of the light reactions of photosynthesis? Describe how these reactions take place, step by step.
  • Present two diagrams showing the cyclic and noncyclic path traveled by an electron during the electron transport chain. What does each chain accomplish?
  • Describe the process of ATP synthesis at the thylakoid membrane. Does ATP synthesis take place in thylakoid membranes that are in the dark? Explain your answer.
  • Describe the three phases of the Calvin cycle. Discuss whether this cycle occurs in the light, the dark, or both. What are the products of the Calvin cycle?
  • What reactants of the Calvin cycle are products of the light reactions? What reactants of the light reactions are products of the Calvin cycle?
  • Explain how photosynthesis reduces carbon dioxide to carbohydrates using ATP and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH).
  • Review the key points of photosynthesis. Conclude with one major contribution of photosynthesis to all life forms.

Include elegant graphics and a reference slide with citations for photos, cartoons, diagrams, or other references.

Cite your sources according to APA guidelines. See the Center for Writing Excellence for more information on using APA style. A minimum of 2 references is required and a maximum of 2 direct quotes is acceptable. BOTH In-text citations and references are required or the assignment will be classified as plagiarism and will not be graded.

Assignment Details

Scientific inquiry in biology starts by observing the living species around you. What separates science from the other methods of seeking truth is that it is testable (e.g., one can devise experiments to test the validity of an idea); it is falsifiable (e.g., an experiment can reveal if an idea is false); and it involves natural causality (e.g., the method involves and depends upon the natural laws of the universe which cause things to happen in a predictable and repeatable manner).

Observation: Scientific inquiry begins when something interesting gets your attention.

Question: Following an observation, a question arises in your mind. It may be something like “I wonder what?” or, “I wonder how? or, “I wonder why?”

Assignment Details

In this assignment, you will take a look at the scientific method. You will design a (fictional) scientific study to answer a specific question based upon an observation.

First, choose 1 of the following observations or questions:

  • Option A
    • Observation: During the winter, you spread salt daily on your driveway to melt the snow. In the springtime, when the lawn begins to grow, you notice that there is no grass growing for about 3 inches from the driveway. Furthermore, the grass seems to be growing more slowly up to about 1 foot from the driveway.
    • Question: Might grass growth be inhibited by salt?
  • Option B
    • Observation: You and your neighbor have small kitchen gardens where you both grow tomatoes. His blotchy green and red tomatoes taste much sweeter than your perfectly uniform red ones.
    • Question: Might tomato sweetness be affected by the green chloroplasts in the fruits?
  • Option C
    • Observation: You went to the bakery to get a loaf of bread, but all of the loaves seemed small. The baker said that he used the same recipe and tested to be sure the yeast in the dough was active, but the machine he used broke down during the kneading process. Because the bread rose, he decided that it had developed enough gluten, and he baked it off anyway.
    • Question: Does yeast need air to make bread rise?

After choosing 1 of the above options (observation and question), you will do some library or Internet research about the subject. Once you have become familiar with the topic, propose a testable hypothesis to answer the question, and follow the rest of scientific method to determine if your hypothesis is correct by designing a controlled experiment.

You will not actually do the experiment or collect results; rather, you will propose a workable controlled experiment and make up what would seem to be reasonable results. You will then discuss those imagined results and draw a conclusion (based upon your imagined results) about whether or not to accept your hypothesis.

Complete the steps of the scientific method for your choice of observation and question using the directions below. Use the following headings in your paper.

Introduction

The introduction is an investigation of what is currently known about the question being asked. Before one proposes a hypothesis or dashes off to the lab to do an experiment, a thorough search is made in the existing literature about the specific question and about topics related to the question. Once one is familiar with what is known about the question under consideration, one is in a position to propose a reasonable hypothesis to test the question.

Hypothesis

This is an educated guess or a best guess about what might be the explanation for the question that is asked. A hypothesis should be a 1-sentence statement (not a question) that can be tested in an experiment. A hypothesis can be stated as a prediction using an if/then statement. The ability to test a hypothesis implies that it has a natural, repeatable cause.

Controlled Experimental Method

The hypothesis is tested in a controlled experiment. A controlled experiment compares a control (e.g., the normal, unmodified, or unrestricted, or uninhibited set-up based on the observation) to one or several experimental set-ups. The conditions in the experimental set-ups are identical to the control in every way (e.g., temperature, composition, shape, kind, etc.), except for the one experimental variable that is being tested. The results obtained from the experimental set-ups will be compared to each other and to those obtained from the control. If done correctly, any differences in the results may be attributed to the experimental variable under consideration.

When designing an experiment, it is important to use multiples (replicates) for each set-up to avoid drawing the wrong conclusion. If the experiment only has one control and only one experimental setup with just one test subject in each, there is always the chance that a single living organism (test subject) could get sick or even die for reasons not caused by the experimental variable. Because living organisms are genetically different, the results from just one test subject in a given setup may not be typical for the species as a whole. This could result in errors when interpreting the results. This kind of problem is avoided by using multiple controls and multiple experimental setups with multiple test subjects.

Be sure to provide sufficient details in your method section so that someone could reproduce your experiment.

The experimental method section should also state clearly how data (numbers) will be collected during the experiment, which will be used to compare results in each test setup.

Results

Because this is a suppositional experiment, you will make up results according to what you think might happen if you actually did the experiment.

Results should include detailed raw data (numbers) rather than just a summary of the results. For example, if data are collected daily for five weeks, results should include the actual data from each day, and not just a summary of what happened at the end of the five weeks. Recorded results should match the experimental method.

Conclusion

In this section, clearly state whether you reject or accept the hypothesis based on the (imagined) results. Discuss what this means in terms of the hypothesis, such as the need for additional experiments or the practical uses or implications of the results.

References

Provide references in APA format. This includes a reference list and in-text citations for references used in the introduction section.

Give your paper a title, and identify each section as specified above. Although the hypothesis will be a 1-sentence response, the other sections will need to be paragraphs to adequately explain your experiment.

Buffalo Case Study

A Case of Rodent Speciation

Background

As an expert in the field of mammalian reproductive strategies, you have been hired by the Department of Nature and Island Resources of the West Indies. This organization is a cooperative of several West Indies islands concerned with the loss of biological diversity on their island nations as tourism and development continue to grow. Scientists working on the island of St. Kitts and its sister island Nevis have uncovered what appears to be a previously undiscovered species of rodent.

Based on the original description of this animal, it was placed in a genus within the squirrel family. What you have been hired to do is to help save the population on St. Kitts, which is small and threatened by development. The population is so small that individuals are having difficulty finding mates and, in many cases, the reproductive seasons are being delayed by up to one year. When you arrive in the region and begin your observations, you notice that the Nevis population is very healthy and could be used as stock for the recovery operation that you plan on the island of St. Kitts.

In your  recovery  plan,  you  bring  animals  from Nevis into the population on St. Kitts to bolster the population numbers, ensure the availability of mates, and increase the genetic diversity within the shrinking population. As a good scientist, you observe the reproductive behaviors of this animal in the field to ensure the success of your program. Within a very short time, you realize that your plan is failing. In the 240 attempts to bring a Nevis animal into the St. Kitts population, you are unable to observe a single successful reproductive event. Although these animals look identical, you are concerned that they are two distinct species. Your focus now becomes identifying the differences between the two populations. What follows is a brief review of the data you collected from your study.

Assignment

This case study describes a recovery program for a rodent population on the island of St. Kitts in the

Caribbean. After reading the case study above, your job is to formulate your own story incorporating some

of the details and data provided while also drawing on several evolutionary concepts studied in class. A list of

these concepts can be found at the end of this document.

There are no limitations on the details you can incorporate into your story, but it should follow some specific guidelines. Your story:

1.Should be 600 words or less.

2.Should incorporate the data supplied in the case study.

3.Should incorporate at least three of the concepts from the “Concept List.” As you incorporate each

concept, you must demonstrate its relevance to your story.

4.Can be told in any form. For instance, one student presented the story as field notes collected from

observing the animals in their natural habitat. Another student presented the story as a series of

experiments and observations made by groups of scientists over hundreds of years. Be creative.

5.Should account for the data on the organisms provided in the case study. It is acceptable to add more

data as you develop your story as long as it fits into the patterns of the data provided.

6.Can include graphics and illustrations. Be sure to cite the source and give credit for the material,

including material taken from the Internet. Avoid plagiarism.

7.Should include a scientific and common name* (see Note below) for the rodent populations. In

developing these names, make sure you use the rules for binomial classification. In addition, make sure

that you put the rodents into an existing genus. You come up with the species names.

8.Needs a good title.

9.Proof read. Check for spelling errors. Make sure your sentences are grammatically correct and that they are complete sentences.

Remember that you are developing an evolutionary picture of a rodent population using data supplied

with the case study. Keep in mind that in an evolutionary story you will be describing events that may have

occurred over very long time periods.

Important: When incorporating concepts from the “Concept List” into your story, you must elaborate on how they relate to your story. Simply including a concept word in your assignment is not acceptable. For example, stating that “the animals became two species because of genetic drift” is not sufficient. You must also explain how genetic drift works in this process.

Evolution: theory or Theory?

Scientists overwhelmingly support the Theory of Evolution.  It provides a framework for the study of life and informs many current issues in science. It has been supported by an enormous quantity of research and is accepted by many religious organizations including the Catholic Church http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/4588289/The-Vatican-claims-Darwins-theory-of-evolution-is-compatible-with-Christianity.html.  Despite all this, it remains a consistently controversial topic in American culture. Why do you think this is?  What do you think will have to happen for this topic to cease being controversial? What is the difference between a “theory” in every day speech and a “Theory” in science? Can a “Theory” ever become a fact?

Kissing Cousins

Watch this TED talk on bonobos, the closest living relative of human beings (along with chimpanzees).  Both species are threatened by habitat destruction and hunting for bushmeat.  What regulations are in place to protect chimps and bonobos in the wild? What restrictions are placed on treatment of bonobos and chimps in captivity, especially those used for psychological and biomedical research?  Do you think these restrictions are too strict or not strict enough? Should the US give them basic human rights as Spain has done?

Jurassic Texas?

Australian scientists reported this spring that they had cloned embryos of the now-extinct gastric brooding frog. Though none of the embryos survived, it seems only a matter of time until de-extinction is a real possibility. What species would you like to see brought back? What are the potential benefits of this kind of research, and what kind of dangers could it bring?

Hypothesis:
Females prefer men as mates with deeper pitched voices over men with higher pitched voices.

A couple points to keep in mind:

•  Use active voice over passive voice: “We did this…” reads better than “This was done…”

•  Correct grammar and spelling are important, so proofread!

Results:

  • What patterns did you find?  Write what were the major trends.
  • No interpretations – Be concise!
  • Use graphs (or tables) to represent findings [see Figures section below]
  • Do NOT “throw out” or ignore results
  • Do NOT present the same data in more than one way
  • Do NOT present raw data. The reader should not be able to tell how each of the 100 people you surveyed answered your questions. Remember we care about the population as a whole.

Figures:

  • You can include the figures and/or tables in the Results section with the text or at the end of the document.
  • Figures and tables need fully explanatory captions of what is being displayed: below for figures, above for tables.
  • Numbering of figures and tables starts at 1 and continues in consecutive order, based on appearance of reference in your paper’s text
    • Figures and tables have separate sets of numbering
  • Only include figures/tables that you refer to in text – if you’re including a figure/table, you need to talk about it in your text.
  • How to refer to a figure/table within the text: “X appears twice as often as Y (Figure 1).”
    •  NOT “See Figure 1.”, “Figure 1 shows something.”, etc.

Discussion: specific → general

  • Start by addressing the original hypotheses: supported or refuted?
    • Do NOT say “prove” – you cannot prove anything with one study.
    • It is OK if your hypothesis was refuted. There is no point to conducting an experiment if we always expect to be right!
  • Discuss the results, major findings, any anomalies…
    • Provide biological explanation of all results. Use the literature to support your ideas.
    • Discussion should tie back to introduction. Do not be afraid to revisit the topics you wrote about in your introduction.
  • Problems with your study?  How might these have affected the interpretation of the results?  How might the study be improved?
  • How do your results compare with other studies?  What did you do similarly/differently?
    • Refer to the studies brought up in the introduction
    • Assume your findings are just as valid as theirs
  • What future research can be done?  Why do your findings matter (big picture)?

Literature Cited:

  • At least 2 journal articles are required in your citations.
  • Reports with more citations tend to do much better.
  • Only include citations here that are actually cited in your paper’s text.
  • Citations should include:

Last name, first initial. Year published. Title of article. Journal title. Volume number: page numbers.

  • When citing within the text of the report: “Female birds tend to prefer a male that has brightly colored feathers (Seamus 2009).”

The human body is truly remarkable and is designed to function effectively. Organs are important structures composed of different tissues that facilitate specific functions within the body. Organs function as part of an integrated group of structures known as organ systems. These organ systems form the organizational units that are responsible for crucial processes necessary for sustaining life.

Examples of organ systems include but are not limited to the cardiovascular system, the digestive system, the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, the excretory system, the endocrine system and the respiratory system. Even organ systems do not function alone. These systems work together, interacting with other organs in a functional network that keeps the body in balance. (Look up the term homeostasisin your text.) When homeostasis or the normal functioning of organ systems is disrupted, disease may develop causing injury to the body, or even death. In this assignment, you will explore organ systems, as well as associated diseases or malfunctions.

Assignment details:

Take a look at the following case studies that detail an outcome associated with a disease/organ malfunction. Select onestudy to investigate further for your assignment.

Critically evaluate the information provided and correlate it with the organ systems that are affected in the scenario. Use the information that you have gathered to answer the assignment questions that follow the case study. For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, the AIU Library, Web resources, and course materials.

Case Study 1:

Atherosclerosis is narrowing of arteries caused by the accumulation of fatty deposits on the arterial walls.

On June 22, 2002 the St. Louis Cardinals were preparing for their upcoming baseball game against the Chicago cubs. Concern arose when their prized pitcher, 33-year old Darryl Kile did not show up for practice. Soon after, he was found still in his hotel room where he had suddenly died in his sleep (New York Times, 2002). It was discovered that the cause of death was related to three of his coronary arteries being 80-90% blocked as a result of atherosclerosis (New York Times, 2002), which ultimately caused him to undergo a heart attack.

Answer the following assignment questions:

  1. Why would atherosclerosis result in a heart attack? Provide a brief explanation based on how the heart functions.
  2. How are arteries different from veins and capillaries? Describe the functions of both arteries and veins.
  3. Vertebrates and some invertebrates have a closed circulatory system. Explain the advantage of having a closed circulatory system over an open circulatory system?
  4. Briefly explain how the lymphatic system is associated with the circulatory system?
  5. Describe one disease that affects the lymphatic vessels similarly to the way that atherosclerosis affects the arteries?

Case Study 2:

Cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, causing an estimated 438,000 deaths – or about 1 out of every 5 – each year (National Cancer Institute, 2008).

Mr. Amos is now 57 years old and has been smoking for the past 30 years of his life. A recent doctor’s visit reveals that Mr. Amos has stage 3 lung cancer, characterized by his symptoms of nagging chest pain, fatigue, coughing up blood, substantial weight loss, and increased carbon dioxide levels in his blood. The doctor informed Mr. Amos that had he quit his smoking habit several years ago, he would have reduced his risk for developing lung cancer later in life. Mr. Amos immediately begins treatment for the lung cancer that has metastasized to his lymph nodes.

Answer the following assignment questions:

  1. What main components in cigarettes affect the respiratory system? Explain their effects on specific organs, cells and/or processes in the respiratory system.
  2. There are alternate mechanisms of transporting carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2 ) in the blood. Explain how smoking might lead to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the blood.
  3. Can smoking affect other organ systems of the body? Give specific examples and briefly explain your answer.
  4. How can you correlate cellular respiration with the respiratory system?
  5. Does smokeless tobacco present a reduced risk for lung cancer and other smoking associated diseases? Provide evidence for your answer.

Case Study 3:

Gigantism is abnormally large growth during childhood caused by excess growth hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland.

Robert Wadlow, born on February 22, 1918, weighed a normal eight pounds, six ounces. However, by the time Robert reached the age of six months old, he weighed 30 pounds (Hamilton, 1993). Within only a year, his weight rose to 62 pounds, more than double the normal weight of a baby at 18 months. Aside from his weight, Robert continued to grow at an astounding rate, reaching six feet, two inches and 195 pounds by the time he was eight years old. Robert’s unique size was attributed to an over active pituitary gland, which produced much higher than normal levels of growth hormone. At the time of his death in July 1940 at the age of 22, Robert had reached a height of 8 feet 11.1 inches and weighed 485 pounds (Hamilton, 1993).

Answer the following assignment questions:

  1. How does growth hormone regulate various body functions in adults, and what could cause the excess secretion of growth hormone?
  2. Discuss the relationship between growth hormone and insulin, and are there complications associated with their interaction?
  3. Why is gigantism usually more difficult to treat than dwarfism?
  4. Give examples of two other hormones secreted by the pituitary, and briefly describe how they specifically affect other organ systems of the body?
  5. Some athletes have resorted to the illegal use of anabolic steroids to increase strength and muscle size. How are anabolic steroids different from growth hormone? Briefly explain your answer.
