Project 1 | Analyzing Visual Rhetoric

Terms You Should Know:

Stakeholder, Rhetoric, Visual Rhetoric (aesthetics, color, media, typography, space), Rhetorical Appeals (Ethos, Pathos, Logos, Kairos), Rhetorical Fallacies

Project Description:

Students will identify an issue or topic that interests them and research the multiple stakeholders connected to the issue. From these stakeholders, students will select a single organization (company, non-profit, or activist) and think critically about the visual and rhetorical strategies this particular group implements in their campaigns. Finally, students will choose two specific images created by the organization (such as advertisements, PSAs, static images used on a website, flyer, billboard, etc.), and analyze how these visual arguments reflect the organization’s goals.

Project Outcomes and Objectives:

Students will…

  • understand how images convey messages to audiences by analyzing visual strategies develop a thesis statement that makes a claim about the relationship between the two images, including how these images reflect a stakeholder’s goals (Focus)

  • support their analysis using primary resources from the stakeholder, the textbook, and outside resources (Evidence)

  • write an effective introduction, body, and conclusion; logically organize supporting points (Organization)

  • employ a process of revision using peer and instructor feedback to produce a paper that is clearly worded and free of grammar/punctuation errors specifically as they relate to  proofreading, punctuation, run-on sentences, comma splices, and sentence fragments (Style)

  • maintain a third-person point of view (Style)

  • follow proper MLA structure both in formatting the paper and citing sources (Format)

Assignment:

Students will write a 1,000 – 1,200 word essay that analyzes how the two images represent the interests of the stakeholder (the stakeholder’s goal or message), taking into consideration audience, message, purpose, rhetorical appeals, and / or rhetorical fallacies. In doing so, students should point to specific details from the image to support their claims. In order to effectively analyze the images, students will need to have an accurate understanding of each stakeholder’s goals. Students are required to use a minimum of two sources: one must be the course textbook or an assigned article; the second must be a source from the stakeholder.

This assignment will be evaluated using the Project 1: Analyzing Visual Rhetoric Rubric.

Role of Research:

Students should support the claims they make about the stakeholder’s perspective / position using outside research. Students may use primary resources from the stakeholder, the textbook, and / or outside resources. Individual instructors may require students to use a certain number of outside sources. At a minimum, students should reference

  • Statements from the stakeholder (primary source material)
  • The course textbook (secondary source material)

Role of Peer Review:

Using MyReviewers, you will provide feedback via peer review. The peer review process allows you to respond to your peers’ drafts as fellow writers working toward the common goal of producing  insightful visual rhetorical analyses. Both you and your peers will be using each other’s comments and recommendations to improve your work. Thus, your individual commitment to peer review has a real impact on the success of the entire class.

Writing Process:

Early Draft

The Early Draft should be used as a brainstorming space where students can begin thinking about the connections between the issue, the various stakeholders, and the visual arguments. Students may use this draft to outline, freewrite, map, etc. as long as the exercise leads to more formulated claims in the subsequent draft.

Intermediate Draft

The Intermediate Draft should be a working draft (1,000 – 1,200 words) that analyzes how these visual arguments reflect the concerns of the stakeholder and discusses visual rhetorical strategies that establish relationships between the two images. This draft should include a thesis, all major points, evidence to support these points (including in-text citations from appropriate sources), and a Works Cited page. The draft must also include the two images analyzed by the student which should be embedded into the document.

Final Draft

The final draft will be a polished 1,000 – 1,200 word essay that that analyzes how these visual arguments reflect the concerns of the stakeholder and discusses visual rhetorical strategies that establish relationships between the two images. This draft should include a thesis, all major points, evidence to support these points (including in-text citations from appropriate sources), and a Works Cited page. It should be free of grammar and spelling errors and should follow proper MLA structure both in formatting the paper and citing sources. The draft must also include the two images analyzed by the student which should be embedded into the document.

1.     Introduction

2.     Reflect on the class discussion. Describe one or more comments by others that made you think about the topic differently or introduced you to new ideas. Be sure to not only describe the comments, but also to reflect on how your thinking was challenged or changed.

3.     Which additional film did you watch?  Compare this with the film watched in class. Many of the films are 8-10 years old.  Research what if anything has transpired more recently in regard to weather, availability of clean water, or water policies.

4.     Relate the themes of Catholic Social Teaching and UN Global Sustainability Goals and contemporary issues of global peace and justice to the world water crisis.

5.

Calculate your water footprint, comment where you rank in relation to average and suggest ways you are willing to conserve water to reduce your footprint.  Take into consideration your “Hidden Water Use” as well.

6.     Conclusion to include your thoughts on the global water crisis.  In “Running Dry”, the narrator, Jane Seymour states, “It is widely believed by a diversity of entities, that water can be a bridge to peace in the Middle East and other parts of the world”.  Comment on whether you think providing access to safe water would have the effect of reducing unrest and terrorism.

What , if any , is the relationship between type of conflict and DDR?

There is a comment by lecturer :

Just a quick note: The question is basically a Yes or No question. Firstly, you need to find if there is a relationship in how DDR is implemented depending on the type of conflict. That is, whether the implementation is different for ethnic wars, secessionist conflicts or revolutions. If you find that it is different then you can identify the key points in which the process of DDR differed. So for example, if in an ethnic process of DDR ethnicity did play a role or not. Or if the process of reintegration for a secessionist conflict was different from other types of war, taking into account the relevance of geography for that specific case.

If you find that there is no relationship; in other words, that the process of implementation of DDR does not vary across conflicts (or varies in unimportant ways) then you can explain why there is no relationship.

This is a topic in which there is not a lot that has been written about; which is an advantage for you in research terms because it gives you more room to write, but also it makes it more difficult to interpret. Please let me know if you have any other doubts or if you need more help with the essay!.

Instructions

  1. Choose one topic from either the list of personal essay topics (A) or the list of expository essay topics (B).
  2. Write an essay of approximately 1000 to 1200 words (about four double-spaced typed pages) on your chosen topic. Expect that if your essay goes over the length requirement, your essay could be returned to you for revision.
  3. Begin your research. You might start with a general Google search and then a Google Scholar search, but you will also need to visit the AU library databases to find sound academic articles. Note: When you’re first learning about a topic, Wikipedia might be an appropriate place to start, but always move on from Wikipedia. As an open source, it is not sufficiently trustworthy for academic purposes. Therefore, do not use quotes or paraphrases from Wikipedia. This is not a source your tutor will want to see on your citation list. Be equally careful of other questionable websites since they are in abundance.
  4. Find two to four reputable secondary sources and review them carefully. At least one source should be from a peer-reviewed journal article accessed through the AU library databases. Please go to Acting on Words and read the segment called “Primary and Secondary Sources” in the chapter called “Finding Information: Types of Sources” or go to http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/education/008-3010-e.html for a sound explanation of primary and secondary sources. Your tutor will also be pleased to help.
  5. Based on the research you found as well as your own brainstorming, develop a straightforward thesis that is sufficiently limited in scope (meaning something you can do justice to in a short essay).
  6. Create an outline.
  7. Consider speaking with your tutor to review your thesis and outline. We strongly encourage you to do so.
  8. Begin the first draft of your essay.
  9. Make use of at least two (and no more than four) secondary sources within your essay by adding quotations and paraphrases. Then, every time you paraphrase or quote, follow these four steps:
    • Introduce each source
    • Present the research
    • Credit the source parenthetically
    • Discuss

In other words, include quotation (and paraphrase) sandwiches in your essay. Don’t just drop in quotations or paraphrases from sources into your essay. (Some experts call these hit and run quotations).

  10. Create a Works Cited or References page, and make sure to take this seriously. Do not guess, and do not use a software program. Doing this correctly is not difficult, but it does require you to pay very close attention to detail. We expect you to do so.
  11. Revise and edit your draft. You should have produced and edited at least one preliminary draft before you hand in the final copy.
  12. Consider using the Write Site’s coaching services. Tutors are not expected or encouraged to review your drafts, but reviewing drafts is one of the mandates of the Write Site.
  13. Study the assignment checklist and answer the questions honestly.
  14. When you’re ready, upload your assignment through the assignment drop box.
  15. In English 255, we prefer MLA citation and format style unless you have a significant reason to do otherwise. If you wish to use APA citation and format style, please speak with your tutor.

The Final Paper will involve applying the concepts learned in class to an analysis of a company using data from its annual report. Using the concepts from this course, you will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the company and write a report either recommending or not recommending purchase of the company stock.

The company I have to use is T-Mobile

Research Tip: The “Mergent” database in the Ashford University Library contains company profiles and financial information for publicly traded companies and their competitors.  To access this database enter the Ashford Library and select “Find Articles and More” in the top menu panel. Next, select “Databases A-Z” and go to section “M” for “Mergent”. For help with using Mergent, use Mergent Online Quick Tips.

For help with reading an annual report access this handy guide from Money Chimp.

The completed report should include:

    • An introduction to the company, including background information.
    • A complete and thorough financial statement review.
    • Pro Forma financial statements (Balance Sheet and Income Statement) for the next fiscal year, assuming a 10 percent growth rate in sales and Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) for the next year.
    • Complete ratio analysis for the last fiscal year using at least two ratios from each of the following categories:
      • Liquidity
      • Financial leverage
      • Asset management
      • Profitability
      • Market value
      • Debt
      • Per-Share
      • Measures of relative value (P/E, P/B)
      • Activity
      • Cash Flow
    • A calculation of Return on Equity (ROE) using the DuPont system.
    • Assessment of management performance by calculating Economic Value Added (EVA).
    • A synopsis of your findings, including your recommendations and rationale for whether or not to purchase stock from this company.
    • Evaluate the financial risks associated with operating internationally.  If your chosen company does not operate internationally, evaluate what the financial risks could be if they were to expand internationally.

The paper

  • Must be eight to ten double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.
  • Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
  • Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.
  • Must use at least five scholarly sources, such as the textbook, industry reports, and articles from the Ashford University library to support your findings and recommendations.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

In this assignment, begin by taking a retrospective look at your life history, to discuss which aspects of your personality have remained consistent and which aspects of your personality have changed over time. Then, analyze the roles of nature and nurture in shaping your personality. Subsequently, discuss possible sources of inaccuracy and bias in any retrospective analysis. Finally, discuss the reasons why systematic scientific studies are considered more valuable than individual accounts.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

Reflect on your life history and discuss which aspects of your personality have changed over time and which aspects have stayed consistent.

Based on your retrospective analysis, describe the roles of nature and nurture in shaping your personality. Reflect on your justification for distinguishing between nature and nurture.

Discuss the possible sources of bias and inaccuracy whenever a person looks back on their past history. Be sure to discuss factors related to memory and factors related to cognition.

Describe why the science of psychology places more emphasis on results based on scientific studies than it does on personal experience and anecdotes.

Here is the information that you will need for the paper.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper formatted in APA in which you address the following 4 areas:

1. Reflect on your life history and discuss which aspects of your personality have changed over time and which aspects have stayed consistent.

2. Based on your retrospective analysis, describe the roles of nature and nurture in shaping your personality. Reflect on your justification for distinguishing between nature and nurture.

3. Discuss the possible sources of bias and inaccuracy whenever a person looks back on their past history. Be sure to discuss factors related to memory and factors related to cognition.

4. Describe why the science of psychology places more emphasis on results based on scientific studies than it does on personal experience and anecdotes.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Be in APA format, typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Use the APA checklist for this assignment provided by your professor (see below).

Include an APA cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the University affiliation, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.

Be an integrated paper. DO NOT simply answer each question in a bullet point approach. Write a succinct and integrated paper addressing all of the 4 areas listed.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

Relate psychological concepts to real-world situations.

Describe the major theories of personality development, learning, memory, cognition, consciousness, development and social psychology.

Use technology and information resources to research issues in psychology.

Write clearly and concisely about psychology using proper writing mechanics.

This is an APA template I put together for you. Feel free to use it in this class or any other class you have which has APA requirements:

In this assignment, you will compare and evaluate risk management techniques from experts in the field. Go to the Ashford University Library and find one article by Dr. James Kallman. Dr. Kallman, an expert in the field of risk management, has written many articles on managing financial risk. Find a second article in the Ashford University Library from another credible author of your choice who also provides recommendations for risk management.

Develop a three- to four-page analysis (excluding the title and reference pages), of the techniques Dr. Kallman has identified for managing risks. In this analysis, compare Dr.Kallman’s techniques to the techniques recommended in the second article you researched. Explain why you agree or disagree with each authors’ recommendations. Describe other factors you believe should be considered in risk management. The assignment should be comprehensive and include specific examples. The paper should be formatted according to APA.

You must cite at least two scholarly sources, in addition to the text, from the Ashford University Library, one being an article by Dr. Kallman. Cite your sources in-text and on the reference page. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center.

Assignment 1: Discussion—The Promises and Perils of Nuclear Power

The term nuclear power refers to the production of electrical energy via controlled nuclear reactions. These reactions generate heat that, in turn, creates steam that runs the generators to produce electricity. Approximately 1/8th of the electricity produced in the world is derived from nuclear power. In this assignment, you will analyze the use of nuclear power as an energy resource.

Respond to the following:

  • Discuss the scientific and technical concepts related to the use of nuclear power as an energy resource. Address the following in your response:
    • How is energy released in a nuclear reaction?
    • How are nuclear reactions controlled?
    • What elements are involved in nuclear power production?
    • What nuclear forces are involved?
  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy, detailing issues related to production, delivery, cost, radiation, air quality, and waste.
  • Identify a country whose electricity production infrastructure relies heavily on nuclear power. Compare and contrast the use of nuclear power in the United States with the use of nuclear power in this country. Provide examples of the use of nuclear power in your community or state.
  • Consider the three major nuclear accidents in the history of the industry: 3-Mile Island (USA), Chernobyl (Ukraine), and Fukushima Dai-Ichi (Japan). What lessons have been learned from these nuclear accidents that can be or have been used to make nuclear power safer?

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

The student will choose a key term from chapters 1 or 2 and write about an experience the student has had in relation to this concept.

Choose a concept that is relevant to an experience in your life and write about those experiences. So do not write about how a concept could relate to your life, write about how it has related to your life (past tense). To receive the full credit, the responses need to be respectful to your classmates, thoughtful, well written (spelling, grammar, etc.,), understandable, relevant, between 100 and 150 words (no more, no less), and concise (no fluff). I urge you not to choose a general term found in normal conversation, (i.e. “Learning”, “Stress” or “Memory”) – words found in the title of a chapter. You need to include somewhere in the title area, the key term and the chapter and page number in the text from which term was taken. I will grade depending on these factors. These assignments, too, have deadlines and can be found on the calendar. A “0” will be earned if not submitted by the deadline. Do not wait until the last minute to do this. Through experience, I am able to recognize if the response is hastily thrown together, and grades are usually reflective of this.

Compare and contrast two Native American writers: Sherman Alexie and Charles Eastman. Consider how dialogue, description, and details are used or explore significant changes in voice, theme, and characterization in these stories about diversity in America. Respond in a five-paragraph APA essay format with quotes, proper in-text citations, and references.

Please be sure to include the following in your assignment submission:

  1. Write a formal, 5-paragraph essay in APA format, including a cover page, in response to this question.Base your answer on your own observations and support your assertions quoting from your assigned readings.
  2. Read the assigned readings from the Native American Literature sections. Highlight quotes, summarize, or paraphrase from this week’s readings and be sure to include an in-text citation in proper APA format (Author, year, p. X).
  3. Include three quotes from our readings. When we discuss literature, it is all about the words before us. They are ours to consider and reflect on. So, you will want to make a strong assertion and prove it, or support it, by quoting from the readings. Include three quotes in our essay.
  4. Create a strong thesis for your essay. A thesis states your main idea in a sentence. A sample thesis (which you are free to use) might be: Charles Alexander Eastman and Sherman Alexie, Jr., both award-winning authors with strong cultural roots, differ greatly in voice, theme, and characterization of Native American culture.
  5. Be sure to include an APA reference page.

Here is the reference for and link to Charles Eastman’s writing that will be used for comparison:

Eastman, C. A. (1907). Old indian days. Retrieved from http://www.gutenberg.org/files/339/339-h/339-h.htm#2H_4_0015

The second reference to use for comparison and citation is: Alexie, S. (1994). Flight. Ploughshares20(1), 38.

Purpose

In Project Two, you will learn how to present an unbiased analysis of two arguments created by stakeholders with seemingly incompatible goals about an issue or topic and create a feasible, objective compromise that would benefit both stakeholders.

Project Description:

You will write a 1,200 – 1,500 word essay based on the following requirements:

  1. analyze two stakeholders with seemingly incompatible goals regarding the same issue or topic
  2. provide background on the stakeholders (context)
  3. include a thesis that presents the point of contention between the stakeholders and explains a proposed compromise
  4. identify why these two stakeholders have not yet come to a resolution
  5. find common ground between these two stakeholders by considering what both have in common
  6. suggest one particular, concrete compromise and defend this compromise by considering
    1. the stated goals and concerns of both stakeholders,
    2. current or past solutions, and
    3. the feasibility of your solution’s implementation
  7. defend this solution as a workable compromise
  8. use at least five sources according to the following guidelines:
    1. At least one primary source material from each two stakeholders being discussed (i.e., information from the stakeholder websites, etc.)
    2. At least one credible, scholarly source for each stakeholder that supports the validity of the stakeholder’s position
    3. At least one credible, scholarly source that supports the viability of the student’s proposed compromise

Assessment:

This project will be evaluated using the Project 2: Finding Common Ground Rubric.

Role of Peer Review

Using MyReviewers, you will provide feedback via peer review. The peer review process allows you to respond to your peers’ drafts as fellow writers working toward the common goal of producing properly formatted, useful and insightful essays based on the FYC Rubric. Both you and your peers will be using each other’s comments and recommendations to improve your work. Thus, your individual commitment to peer review has a real impact on the success of the entire class.

Assignment:

In a 1,200-1,500 word essay, students will explain the perspectives of two different stakeholders on a given issue or topic, identifies common ground the two stakeholders share, and proposes and argues for a compromise that benefits both stakeholders. Students should clearly identify both stakeholders, fairly represent their perspectives using evidence, and posit a way for these two groups to reach common ground. Building on this common ground, students should also clearly argue for a solution that would allow both groups to reach a compromise on the issue or topic, provide contexts in which the compromise will work, and demonstrate that the compromise appeases both stakeholders.

Role of Research:

Research for this project will involve moving beyond the stakeholders themselves to a consideration of the issue or topic and a potential solution. Students may need to consider the following: basic historical information about the issue or topic; the factual accuracy of the stakeholders claims; research that supports the student’s proposed solution; research that challenges or complicates the issue or topic or proposed solution; research about previously attempted solutions; other research surrounding the chosen issue or topic.

For this paper, the sources that must be quoted/cited include the following:

  • Primary source material from each of the two stakeholders being discussed (i.e., information from the stakeholder websites, etc.)
  • At least one credible, scholarly source for each stakeholder that supports the validity of the stakeholder’s position
  • At least one credible, scholarly source that supports the viability of the student’s proposed compromise.

In total, the minimum number of sources (and Works Cited citations) should be five: two primary sources from the stakeholders, one source per stakeholder supporting the stakeholder’s position, and one source supporting the student’s compromise.

Role of Peer Review:

In this project, peer review will be particularly valuable for writers because it will provide an outside perspective regarding students’ biases. Moreover, students will engage with peers’ writing to evaluate their empathy and assess their compromises, therefore reinforcing the empathy that this project fosters.

Writing Process:

Early Draft: Students will discuss their answers to the Project 2 Guiding Questions Worksheet in workshop, which includes a space for brainstorming possible solutions (e.g. media-based; legal-based; mindset-based). Students may use this space to outline, free-write, mind map, or otherwise thoughtfully express insightful ideas.

Intermediate Draft: The Intermediate Draft should be a working draft (1,200 – 1,500 words) that explains the perspectives of two different stakeholders on a given issue or topic, identifies common ground the two stakeholders share, and proposes and argues for a compromise that benefits both stakeholders. This draft should include a thesis, all major points, evidence to support these points (including in-text citations from appropriate sources), and a Works Cited page.

Final Draft: The Final Draft will be a polished essay (1,200 – 1,500 words) that explains the perspectives of two different stakeholders on a given issue or topic, identifies common ground the two stakeholders share, and proposes and argues for a compromise that benefits both stakeholders. This draft should include a thesis, all major points, evidence to support these points (including in-text citations from appropriate sources), and a Works Cited page. The document should be free of organizational, grammar, and style errors and should follow proper MLA structure both in formatting the paper and citing sources.

*Final drafts that have not been significantly revised will be lowered one letter grade.

*It is your responsibility to upload your project drafts to both Canvas and My Reviewers. Assignments will be counted as late until they have been turned into both sites.

Future Considerations

Project 2 fosters an understanding of viable compromises tailored specifically to the goals of two stakeholders with disparate objectives. With this developing ability to focus on the specific needs and abilities of an audience, in Project 3 students will make a call to action through which they will attempt to persuade an unengaged audience to become involved with the issue at hand. In doing so, students will consider what they learned in Project 1 about visual rhetoric and multimedia-based arguments, as well as how to make a call that their target audience not only can, but will do to become engaged with the topic.  Students should consider: What might the chosen organization need from you? What kind of composition might help the organization achieve its purpose?

The draft must also include the two images analyzed by the student which should be embedded into the document.

diagnoses.  It is also important to note that while several media examples
included in this course are of convicted murderers, this is not characteristic
behavior for the majority of Personality Disorders, rather, these individuals
are included because the gained makes them good case examples).
Which of any of these people do you believe meet criteria for Avoidant
Personality Disorder? What aspects does he meet and which criteria does
he not meet? What other diagnosis does the individual potentially meet
criteria for (a personality disorder or another mental health disorder)?
Criticize him as an appropriate example of Avoidant Personality Disorder
(in other words, why is this person a bad example of this disorder). How do
you determine the difference between social anxiety and AVPD?
NOTE: provide an alternative diagnosis and justification
