The student will:
Demonstrate knowledge & perform within scope of practice, by recognizing limitations, and assume responsibility to get appropriate help/guidance in a timely manner.Observe nurses giving bedside shift report. Safely perform nursing skills with appropriate supervision of instructor and/or hospital staff (may include all skills practiced in lab). Participate in doing hourly patient safety checks. Interprofessional Communication: Discuss & comment on at least one shift report that you observed. How does this compare with what you learned in class about interprofessional communication and SBAR? What could have been done differently? How could report have been improved? Was the SBAR format apparent? Was it difficult for you to take report? Why or why not? Safety: Describe your observations about safety in the hospital setting. Were the staff aware of safety concerns? What measures were taken to improve safety in the patient’s environment? Was fall risk a concern for any of the patients? How was their fall risk determined? How was mobility addressed? Were patients encouraged to be mobile? What safety measures were implemented? Were any patients in restraints? What procedures were followed? Did you witness any medications being given? What safety measure did you witness in terms of medication administration? Future practice: Compare yourself to a practicing nurse you encountered during this experience. Where do you need the most growth and development? What are your strongest points? What did you experience/learn at the hospital that you will impact your future practice as a nurse? How?
